Frederick Huzinger (the leader of a fictitious sect) is not convinced that the soul is predestined and during the argument with Calvin he reveals his heretical beliefs, according to which for the divine judgment to be valid on humans everyone should live twice, as St Lazarus of Bethany did. In what follows, the sect (named The Second Chance) will abandon Geneva and, after adventures which will last three centuries, will end up in today's Kyrgyzstan. There, in fictitious Lazarburg, a biochemist called Franz Schneider will discover the secret of the human character through giving some people the chance to live twice (resurrecting them at a certain age).
