The Spy and the Traitor Book Description:

'THE BEST TRUE SPY STORY I HAVE EVER READ' JOHN LE CARRÉ A thrilling Cold War story about a KGB double agent, by one of Britain's greatest historians On a warm July evening in 1985, a middle-aged man stood on the pavement of a busy avenue in the heart of Moscow, holding a plastic carrier bag. In his grey suit and tie, he looked like any other Soviet citizen. The bag alone was mildly conspicuous, printed with the red logo of Safeway, the British supermarket. The man was a spy for MI6. A senior KGB officer, for more than a decade he had supplied his British spymasters with a stream of priceless secrets from deep within the Soviet intelligence machine. No spy had done more to damage the KGB. The Safeway bag was a signal: to activate his escape plan to be smuggled out of Soviet Russia. So began one of the boldest and most extraordinary episodes in the history of espionage. In The Spy and the Traitor Ben Macintyre reveals a tale of betrayal, duplicity and raw courage that changed the course of the Cold War forever.

Review of the Spy and the Traitor Book Description:

Ben Macintyre takes us back to the 1980's and the Cold War, with his usual brand of enthusiasm and ability to give the most important, political events, the human angle necessary to make you care about those involved. "The Spy and the Traitor" is an exceptionally rich book, elegantly composed and first rate, loads of photos a great deal of history, governmental issues, Cold War and furthermore current undertakings. Ben Macintyre's record of the life of Oleg Gordievsky uncovers the genuine everyday exercises of a counterintelligence specialist. It is brimming with doubt, dread of disclosure or double-crossing, and tremendous pressure. It's an interesting perspective into the lives of counterintelligence specialists.Gordievsky, the son of a KGB officer, grew up all too aware of how those around him often lived a double life and whose fascination with foreign countries, led him to do his best to take up a posting abroad. When dissatisfaction and disillusionment, with the Soviet Union, led to him being flagged as a 'person of interest, ' it was not long before the British made a move to recruit him.Gordievsky was betrayed by someone in the intelligence community, his almost miraculous escape from Russia will keep you on the edge of your seat! It took years to discover his betrayer. Oleg Gordievsky was sentenced in absentia to death by the Russian courts. He remains on the "hit list" to this day.

Agent Sonya Book Description:

The "master storyteller" (San Francisco Chronicle) behind the New York Times bestseller The Spy and the Traitor uncovers the true story behind the Cold War's most intrepid female spy. "[An] immensely exciting, fast-moving account."--The Washington Post NAMED ONE OF THE BEST BOOKS OF THE YEAR BY Foreign Affairs * Kirkus Reviews * Library Journal In 1942, in a quiet village in the leafy English Cotswolds, a thin, elegant woman lived in a small cottage with her three children and her husband, who worked as a machinist nearby. Ursula Burton was friendly but reserved, and spoke English with a slight foreign accent. By all accounts, she seemed to be living a simple, unassuming life. Her neighbors in the village knew little about her. They didn't know that she was a high-ranking Soviet intelligence officer. They didn't know that her husband was also a spy, or that she was running powerful agents across Europe. Behind the facade of her picturesque life, Burton was a dedicated Communist, a Soviet colonel, and a veteran agent, gathering the scientific secrets that would enable the Soviet Union to build the bomb. This true-life spy story is a masterpiece about the woman code-named "Sonya." Over the course of her career, she was hunted by the Chinese, the Japanese, the Nazis, MI5, MI6, and the FBI--and she evaded them all. Her story reflects the great ideological clash of the twentieth century--between Communism, Fascism, and Western democracy--and casts new light on the spy battles and shifting allegiances of our own times. With unparalleled access to Sonya's diaries and correspondence and never-before-seen information on her clandestine activities, Ben Macintyre has conjured a page-turning history of a legendary secret agent, a woman who influenced the course of the Cold War and helped plunge the world into a decades-long standoff between nuclear superpowers.

A Spy Among Friends Book Description:

Kim Philby was the most notorious British defector and Soviet mole in history. Agent, double agent, traitor and enigma, he betrayed every secret of Allied operations to the Russians in the early years of the Cold War. Philby's two closest friends in the intelligence world, Nicholas Elliott of MI6 and James Jesus Angleton, the CIA intelligence chief, thought they knew Philby better than anyone, and then discovered they had not known him at all. This is a story of intimate duplicity; of loyalty, trust and treachery, class and conscience; of an ideological battle waged by men with cut-glass accents and well-made suits in the comfortable clubs and restaurants of London and Washington; of male friendships forged, and then systematically betrayed. With access to newly released MI5 files and previously unseen family papers, and with the cooperation of former officers of MI6 and the CIA, this definitive biography unlocks what is perhaps the last great secret of the Cold War.

Journal of Book Reviews Book Description:

My first question remains the timing of this book.In every review or almost all reviews , there is a claim that this book is written without official support. This explanation raises a question mark ? Why at the height of East West rivalry and an intense stand off between UK-USA and Russia has this book with a definitely Russian baiting bias and agenda been written without British government support ?The British are subtle and so is the timing of this book like a hammer striking the iron when the fire is at its hottest!Gordievskys memoirs of 1995 told his story in detail.Gordievsky also authored various books on KGB and by 2005 the KGB collection was complete .How and why this revival of Gordievsky in Britain in 2018 ?Things don't happen in Britain like that . Like this year the British think tank RUSI went out of the way to project Pakistan Army chief , by sponsoring a Pakistani researcher Kamal Alam .Kamal then published an essay from the RUSI platform extolling Pakistan Army chiefs strategy in Afghanistan. My friend Dr Hamid Hussain was intrigued and had the following to state :--"I had some limited interaction with Kamal. Army has increased some coordination with British and Kamal's presence at RUSI provides a window to GHQ. However, a more robust and critical review would have been more productive rather than simply praising the biggest idol in the temple.A British Guardian review meekishly claims that "Macintrye had no access to MI6's archives, which remain secret."From my long association with British and having many British cousins since ages I can smell ulterior motives when you read statements like Guardian reviewers statement quoted above.

The Spy Who Couldn t Spell Book Description:

A NEW YORK TIMES BESTSELLER The thrilling, true-life account of the FBI’s hunt for the ingenious traitor Brian Regan—known as the Spy Who Couldn’t Spell. Before Edward Snowden’s infamous data breach, the largest theft of government secrets was committed by an ingenious traitor whose intricate espionage scheme and complex system of coded messages were made even more baffling by his dyslexia. His name is Brian Regan, but he came to be known as The Spy Who Couldn’t Spell. In December of 2000, FBI Special Agent Steven Carr of the bureau’s Washington, D.C., office received a package from FBI New York: a series of coded letters from an anonymous sender to the Libyan consulate, offering to sell classified United States intelligence. The offer, and the threat, were all too real. A self-proclaimed CIA analyst with top secret clearance had information about U.S. reconnaissance satellites, air defense systems, weapons depots, munitions factories, and underground bunkers throughout the Middle East. Rooting out the traitor would not be easy, but certain clues suggested a government agent with a military background, a family, and a dire need for money. Leading a diligent team of investigators and code breakers, Carr spent years hunting down a dangerous spy and his cache of stolen secrets. In this fast-paced true-life spy thriller, Yudhijit Bhattacharjee reveals how the FBI unraveled Regan’s strange web of codes to build a case against a man who nearly collapsed America's military security.
