Play the Way You Feel Book Description:

Jazz stories have been entwined with cinema since the inception of jazz film genre in the 1920s, giving us origin tales and biopics, spectacles and low-budget quickies, comedies, musicals, and dramas, and stories of improvisers and composers at work. And the jazz film has seen a resurgence in recent years--from biopics like Miles Ahead and HBO's Bessie, to dramas Whiplash and La La Land. In Play the Way You Feel, author and jazz critic Kevin Whitehead offers a comprehensive guide to these films and other media from the perspective of the music itself. Spanning 93 years of film history, the book looks closely at movies, cartoons, and a few TV shows that tell jazz stories, from early talkies to modern times, with an eye to narrative conventions and common story points. Examining the ways historical films have painted a clear picture of the past or overtly distorted history, Play the Way You Feel serves up capsule discussions of sundry topics including Duke Ellington's social life at the Cotton Club, avant-garde musical practices in 1930s vaudeville, and Martin Scorsese's improvisatory method on the set of New York, New York. Throughout the book, Whitehead brings the same analytical bent and concise, witty language listeners know from his jazz segments on NPR's Fresh Air with Terry Gross. He investigates well-known songs, traces the development of the stock jazz film ending, and offers fresh, often revisionist takes on works by such directors as Howard Hawks, John Cassavetes, Shirley Clarke, Francis Ford Coppola, Clint Eastwood, Spike Lee, Robert Altman, Woody Allen and Damien Chazelle. In all, Play the Way You Feel is a feast for film-genre fanatics and movie-watching jazz enthusiasts.

Feel Your Way Through Book Description:

NATIONAL BESTSELLER • The personal and poignant debut poetry collection from the award-winning singer, songwriter, and producer revolves around the emotions, struggles, and experiences of finding your voice and confidence as a woman. “I’ve realized that some feelings can’t be turned into a song . . . so I’ve started writing poems. Just like my songs, they are personal and honest. Just like my songs, they have hooks and rhymes. Just like my songs, they talk about what it’s like to be twenty-something trying to navigate a wildly beautiful and broken world.” Deeply emotional and candid, Feel Your Way Through explores the challenges and celebrates the experiences faced by Kelsea Ballerini as she navigates the twists and turns of growing into a woman today. In this book of original poetry, Ballerini addresses themes of family, relationships, body image, self-love, sexuality, and the lessons of youth. Her poems speak to the often harsh, and sometimes beautiful, onset of womanhood. Honest, humble, and ultimately hopeful, this collection reveals a new dimension of Ballerini’s artistry and talent.

Why On Earth Do I Feel This Way Book Description:

Why on Earth Do I Feel This Way? brings an entirely new perspective to the field of anxiety and mental health and will make a drastic impact that no other treatment intervention has done before. As a psychologist who has worked in various clinical venues, I found there to be a pattern of anxiety at the root of the symptoms my clients were experiencing. This was the same pattern for clients who were battling addiction and experiencing mood disorders, schizophrenia, and even personality disorders. Although each case was unique, I would hear the same questions repeated: “Why me? Why on earth do I feel this way?” I stopped focusing on the specific symptoms of my clients that would qualify them for a mental health diagnosis but focused on how and why they were experiencing anxiety. I was then able to recognize another factor that was precipitating the anxiety: a lack of control. Focusing on control, or lack thereof, as presented by control theory in the book, can supplement the work that people have been doing to manage their mental health and better help them understand why they have been making progress in their work. It will also provide a preventive approach to managing anxiety and mental health moving forward and increasing self-esteem and self-confidence by understanding what anxiety is, where it comes from, and what to do with it. The information provided in this book can be utilized by various demographics, including adolescents, adults, parents (parents can also apply these tools for younger-age children), teachers, and other school personnel. There is a lack of preventive measures in place to help address anxiety at the forefront and prevent it from progressing into more severe mental health disorders or prevent students from engaging in maladaptive, harmful, and risky behaviors. Although schools have started taking additional steps to address mental health, they are still struggling to keep up with the need for services and are only targeting students who are at risk or suffering. Why on Earth Do I Feel This Way? provides students, parents, and teachers with a road map of how to effectively manage and get control over their anxiety.

There is their mother, who takes a divide-and-conquer approach to child-rearing, and their father, who takes an absent one. There is also their older brother Michael, whose disapproval is a force to be reckoned with. There is the catastrophe that is never spoken of, but which has shaped everything . . . As adults, Alice and Hanna must deal with disappointments in work and in love as well as increasingly complicated family tensions, and lives that look dismayingly dissimilar to what they'd intended. They must look for a way to repair their own fractured relationship, and they must finally choose their own approach to their dominant mother: submit or burn the house down. And they must decide at last whether life is really anything more than (as Hanna would have it) a tragedy with a few hilarious moments. From the author of the Waterstones Book of the Month Our Fathers comes a compelling domestic comedy about complex family dynamics, mental health and the intricacies of sibling relationships.
