In Part One (“Welcome”), she describes the three generations of her family, the Sinclairs; Granddad, widowed; his three daughters, all divorced or separated from their husbands; and Cadence and her six cousins. The family spends every summer on a family-owned island. One aunt’s longtime boyfriend and his nephew, Gat, always join them there, even though Granddad doesn’t like the fact that they are of South Asian descent. Cadence, her two oldest cousins, and Gat are known in the family as “the Liars,” for unexplained reasons. Cadence and Gat fell in love when Cadence was fourteen, but the next summer there was an accident of some sort. Cadence doesn’t recall much, but apparently she suffered a head injury. She now has migraines, for which she takes prescription pain medication. None of the Liars stayed in touch with Cadence during her long recovery. The following summer, when her father took her on a trip to Europe, they didn’t reply to her emails. In Part Two (“Vermont”), Cadence struggles to remember more of her accident. When she asks Penny for details, Penny replies tearfully that Cadence has asked many times before, and always finds the answers upsetting. When Cadence’s father wants to take her to Europe again next summer, Cadence insists on returning to the island. Her mother and father reluctantly settle on a plan for her to spend just the first month of the summer there. Meanwhile, it becomes clear during a visit from Granddad and a phone call with one of the younger cousins that all is not well with the family. Granddad’s mind is starting to fail, the younger cousins gossip about Cadence being a drug addict, and the cousin on the phone thinks the island is haunted. All Fishermen Are Liars Author : Michael Youngleson Publisher : iUniverse Total Pages : 154 Release : 2003-11-01 ISBN 10 : 9780595297825 ISBN 13 : 059529782X Language : EN, FR, DE, ES & NL GET BOOK All Fishermen Are Liars Book Description: In his youth the author was an insatiable angler, and when he grew up the affliction became worse. As a young boy in Africa, the desire to hunt things, spend nights out in the bush and search rocky pools along remote beaches was inbred. River minnows, bait pinkies, and small bream were caught with as much enthusiasm as giant marlin later on, when fishing adventures took the author all over the world. Time spent fishing should not be deducted from a man's span of life, and the author found enough other time to be admitted as an attorney, to be a hands-on beef cattle farmer (as various broken ribs and cracked bones testify) and to be a property developer of formidable proportions. One of his earliest entrepreneurial exploits was to remove his grandmother's mosquito net to catch swimming prawns. The net did not last long. A subsequent brainwave was to encapsulate large cockroaches in clear plastic blocks inscribed with 'souvenir of Durban', a product that received much acclaim in the tourist shops. A personal visit from a furious mayor of the city ended this profitable business. Despite every effort on their part, the young wives of the fishermen had great difficulty in producing sons, and at one time the author's particular group had collected 17 beautiful daughters, and only five wonderful sons. Dei Gratia Was this because spring tides come with the full moon, or was too much salt rubbed into the wombs?
Mediation and Multimodal Meaning Making in Digital Environments Author : Ilaria Moschini Publisher : Routledge Total Pages : 248 Release : 2021-11-11 ISBN 10 : 9781000471205 ISBN 13 : 1000471209 Language : EN, FR, DE, ES & NL GET BOOK Mediation and Multimodal Meaning Making in Digital Environments Book Description: This collection explores the mediation of a wide range of processes, texts, and practices in contemporary digital environments through the lens of a multimodal theory of communication. Bringing together contributions from renowned scholars in the field, the book builds on the notion that any form of digital communication inherently presents a rich combination of different semiotic modes and resources as a jumping-off point from which to critically reflect on digital mediation from three different perspectives. The first section looks at social and semiotic practices and the implications of their mediation on artistic production, cultural heritage, and commerce. The second part of the volume focuses on dynamics of awareness, cognition, and identity formation in participants to digitally-mediated communicative processes. The book’s final section considers the impact of mediation on shaping new and different types of textualities and genres in digital spaces. The book will be of particular interest to scholars, researchers and students in multimodality, digital communication, social semiotics, and media studies.
